My mission for publishing Family Secrets goes far beyond wanting to share the delicious food of Peru. It began with my desire to encourage people to sit down together around a table to savor mealtime on a regular basis, as well as recognizing the importance of passing on recipes and traditions.

During the publishing process, I felt a need to take it a step further. That's when I decided I needed to do more to give back to this beautiful and diverse country by donating 100% of my book sales profits to the Peruvian American Medical Society (PAMS). This non-profit has been in existence for over 40 years. PAMS was founded by a small group of Peruvian physicians living in the U.S. who wanted to use their skills to help the underserved people of Peru. Since then, the organization has grown to over 400 members and continues to provide excellent medical care through permanent clinics and medical missions throughout Peru. Learn more at

My family and I are personally involved in the PAMS medical mission to Lircay, Peru, one of the poorest regions of the country. Lircay is a small mining town in central Peru. Situated in the Andes at over 10,000 feet, the people are mostly indigenous and many only speak Quechua, the ancient language of the Incan Empire. With a population of approximately 7000, many are without fresh water and live in shanties. Despite these conditions, the people are very kind, warm, and humble, greeting everyone they pass with a big smile and hello. They cannot thank us enough when we are there providing them with medical care.
